Some farmers markets are produce-only, but I’ve seen many CFOs successfully sell baked goods at the markets that allow them. I’ve seen two distinct approaches: the niche approach and the bakery approach. The former focuses on a few select products, and the latter offers an array of baked goods. The former can command higher prices but the latter…[Read more]

I don’t think that spice blends are allowed, but I’m not completely sure, since the law recently changed. If you could sell them, it would only be at farmers markets. You can contact the health dept to check.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice on selling baked goods at local flea/farmer’s markets? I know that produce sells pretty well, but I’ve not seen a lot of baked goods (not here in AK anyways). There are, however, quite a few local markets in my area; and I was thinking it might be worth a try. I’m still not sure, though…so I wanted some…[Read more]

No — to sell pet food in Illinois, you need to use an approved facility, and you need to contact the ag dept.

Kristin, my assumption is that bone broth would not be allowed, but you should check with the ag dept.

Vinegars probably aren’t allowed, but I’m not 100% sure, so you should contact the ag dept.

Could one make flavored vinegars in New York. I’m thinking strawberry, blueberry, black raspberry, honey/balsamic, or maple balsamic.

Kathleen, it depends on your state, but if the state only allows direct sales, the likelihood is that you cannot offer CFO products. CFOs are often explicitly not food facilities, and food facilities cannot offer their products for sale. I don’t think your would be considered a public event unless the market happens at a specific location.…[Read more]
