The USDA says that you can still use the word to identify “organic sugar” or other organic products on your ingredients list only, as long as you do the following:
Prevent commingling with non-organic products and contact with prohibited substances.
Meet the USDA organic labeling requirements.
Maintain records for at least three years that…[Read more]David Crabill replied to the topic Labels in the forum Florida 8 years, 3 months ago
That label wouldn’t be legal. You might be able to use the word “organic” in your ingredients list, if you meet certain requirements. Here’s an overview about organic labeling: http://forrager.com/faq/#organic

Unless you are buying and reselling commercially made a pre-packaged fondant toppers, I don’t think this would be allowed. I’m pretty sure you need to use a commercial kitchen. http://forrager.com/faq/#commercial

You can buy premade items and use them, as long as those items would be allowed if you made them. For instance, if Colorado doesn’t allow frostings that contain dairy, then you couldn’t use a commercially-produced frosting that contains dairy, even if it doesn’t require refrigeration. At least that is my understanding… perhaps the health dept…[Read more]

You should be able to do this from home with PA’s cottage food law, but if you want or need to rent a commercial kitchen, then you need to contact the ag dept to determine what’s required. You should also contact the farmers market manager to learn about additional requirements they may have.

You’re not going to be able to merge a CFO with a commercial operation. Since your friend has a commercial kitchen, I’d recommend skipping the cottage food law and getting certified as a regular food operation. But it’s sometimes a good idea to deal with the limitations of the cottage food law for the short term until you prove your business concept.

As I understand it, correct me if I am wrong, you can make $10,000 per year on each item sold.
What is the definition of an item?
Is it broad as in cakes?Or can it be broken down into
Occasional cakes
Wedding cakes
Cupcakes
Etc.Thanks

I am located in Pittsburgh PA. I want to sell my baked goods at local farmers markets, and need to find out what licenses i will need to be compliant. If I am baking in a commercial kitchen that I found on Kitchenincubator.com, do I just need a retail license and farmer’s market vendor license? Please help!
