I think at least one other person in this group is a Memphis local. I’m looking into selling a few non-PHFs under the cottage food law, and I’m totally new to the concept! Two questions – well, three:

In NY it says you can make spice and seasoning mixes with commercially dried herbs and spices for repackaging. Can I use peppers that I grow and dehydrate to make my own powders and seasonings?

Often you are exempt from having to charge state sales tax, but you may need to charge local sales tax. It also depends on where you are selling (may have to charge it at a fair, for instance). http://forrager.com/faq/#sales-tax

I don’t think you can sell from your retail store, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask the ag dept to see if they will allow it.

David Crabill replied to the topic Question about free samples of a non-PHF (coffee) brewed to order for sampling in the forum Tennessee 8 years, 7 months ago
Certain cottage foods cannot be sampled in their prepared state, such as dip mixes. The ability to sell roasted coffee does not include prepared coffee, but some states do allow the sale of coffee and tea because those are low-risk items. You should contact the ag dept to learn about the rules for selling prepared coffee.

Most people apply for a business license as a sole proprietor and get a Fictitious Business Name, also known as a Doing Business As (DBA). You will need to contact your county offices to learn what’s required in your area.
