Paul, I know that some people roast coffee beans in their oven, but I don’t know how most people do it. It is possible to have your kitchen extend to other parts of the home (that aren’t sleeping areas), but I don’t know if a garage would be allowed. Assuming you’re in CA, you should talk with your environmental health dept about what they will allow.

No, cooked potatoes and cheese would not be allowed in cottage food items. You’ll need to use a commercial kitchen. http://forrager.com/faq/#commercial

Hi. I am new to the Cottage food industry. I purchased the book “Homemade” and can’t wait to receive it in the mail. My question is… Do I ONLY need an inspection if I am going to put my baked goods in shops and stores? Or do I also need an inspection, just selling my goods to business’s and friends?
Thank you from Cali! Soooooo excited?Annmarie Holbrook joined the group California 7 years, 7 months ago

Thanks for letting me know. I’m looking into the problem, but for now, I just disabled reCAPTCHA, so it should work. Thanks for your persistence and patience!

Taylor, you can find business in any way you want, including using Facebook in a variety of ways. You can sell cakes as long as you follow all of the rules for Florida’s cottage food law: http://forrager.com/law/florida/

Ed, as far as I know, you would need to use a commercial kitchen to do this. I know it seems impractical but it is the same process that other companies that produce fermented foods use.

Christian, if you are a Class B CFO, then you can sell to commercial businesses, and it is my understanding that they can sell your product by the same means that they sell their own. So assuming that the farmers market vendor is a commercial food business (and not simply a farmer that sells produce), then I would think that they could resell your…[Read more]

Michelle, I’m not surprised that they wouldn’t allow canal water. Usually private water allowances are in regards to underground wells that are not in proximity to animals, waste, etc. Private wells are allowed after they have been tested. Perhaps you could offer to have your water tested, though they might still not allow it because there are too…[Read more]

Juan, I still haven’t heard about any changes in Miami Dade’s policy, but you should contact their health dept to ask if they allow CFOs now. It would be the same with the other counties you mentioned, but I will say that you must use the laws of whichever county your primary residence is in. You can’t just use any county’s law, unless you move there.
David Crabill replied to the topic Can a retail location you wholesale your class B product to legally ship it out? in the forum California 7 years, 11 months ago
From what I have heard, it would be legal for a commercial food business to ship a product after they have purchased it from you.

I’m sorry to hear that you were having trouble. I just tried it and it’s working for me. Maybe it was just a temporary server issue or something.

Vanessa, the food safety certificate that Sonia was referring to is probably a food manager certificate. However, CFOs in Florida aren’t required to get food safety training. If you’d like basic training, you can look up a food handler training course.

You don’t need a license from the ag dept, but you may need other licenses to start your business. You will have to check with local officials for the process of starting a business in your area. http://forrager.com/faq/#starting

You only need an inspection if a 3rd party, like a store, is selling for you.
