I feel like a broken record. I've been saying it and I'll say it again... I'm still trying to catch up from a busy summer. There is simply so much progress happening this year, it's hard to keep up with it all!
This week
we are celebrating Tennessee! Their
new law went into effect at the beginning of July, and it makes their food freedom law a lot better!
Now
producers in Tennessee can sell many types of perishable products too, including poultry products.
Tennessee's law is quite notable in that there is so
much a producer can do with their business, and yet so little regulation. There is no licensing, inspection, training, etc.
In fact, their ag department's
website basically says: "Don't contact us about this law -- if you want answers about what's allowed, call a lawyer."
I've never seen anything like it!Considering that, it's even more notable that they were able to add perishable products to their law. Granted, they don't allow wholesale or remote sales of perishable foods, but even still, it's a major step forward.
Plus, Tennessee is now
one of the only states to allow almost any type of poultry product. Many other food freedom states only allow poultry products if the producer raises the poultry themselves, but Tennessee now allows producers to use any federal or state inspected poultry as well.
I'm not saying it's a perfect law, but it's definitely
one of the best in the country!
