You would no longer be able to make your products from home, and you’d need to get a commercial license: http://forrager.com/faq/#commercial
David replied to the topic Laws on health claims in food items in the forum California 10 years, 6 months ago
I really have no idea. When you make a health claim on the label, you need to get the nutrition facts for it, but in this case, I think you should call the health dept for more details.

They just released an amendment and it was not added, which tells me that it’s unlikely to ever get added by the health dept.

For all the talk from health depts about cottage foods being unsafe (because the kitchen is not inspected), I have never heard of one person getting sued over their cottage food products. Many CFOs get liability insurance to protect against it, and yet as far as I can tell none have needed it. By the very nature of cottage foods, they are very…[Read more]

Yes, both of those are allowed.
David replied to the topic Sourdough Bread Items in the forum Indiana 10 years, 6 months ago
Yes, all of those items should be allowed. Bagels are the only questionable one, since they’re deep-fried, not baked. You can call the health dept for clarification.

David replied to the topic do need licence to sell food fro my house in the forum California 10 years, 6 months ago
You need a commercial (and catering, I believe) license, and you need to cook your foods in a commercial kitchen: http://forrager.com/faq/#commercial
David replied to the topic Mixing a BBQ sauce??? in the forum Louisiana 10 years, 6 months ago
You can’t do this from your home kitchen. You can build another kitchen onto your home, but this can be really pricey. http://forrager.com/faq/#commercial

You don’t need a license from the ag dept. You may need a business license, depending on where you live.

It depends on the rules for where you live. http://forrager.com/faq/#nonprofit
David replied to the topic Home Based Candies in the forum Maryland 10 years, 6 months ago
The reason they are not on the list is because I couldn’t find any firm info online that verified that candy is allowed in MD. However, I also couldn’t find any evidence to suggest that they are not allowed. So I really don’t know, and you’ll need to call the health dept to find out.

Usually restaurants and grocery stores are more lucrative if you can get them to carry your products. Most startups just do whatever they can get their hands on, or whatever they have the time for. Selling to individuals takes less time and effort, and can be more rewarding because you develop relationships with your customers. But it just depends…[Read more]

You would need to make the muffins and cookies in a commercial kitchen. As far as I know, it isn’t possible to do at home. http://forrager.com/faq/#commercial
David replied to the topic How to ship baked goods in the forum California 10 years, 6 months ago
Colorado actually doesn’t specifically say in their online resources that shipping is disallowed, but if you asked the health dept, I’m 95% sure they would say no to shipping. You can interpret it however you want, but interstate sales are definitely not allowed.
David replied to the topic Selling boiled peanuts in the forum Arkansas 10 years, 6 months ago
I don’t think those are allowed under the cottage food law.

The conference looks great. I hope they have one this year too.
David, is it possible to touch base with you one-on-one? I am in the middle of a startup venture that relates to cottage foods and am very interested in getting your opinion on a couple of areas.
I’ll respond to your PM soon.
