Good Morning, PA. I’m looking for residents in Montgomery (or Bucks) county who started a business baking from their home kitchen. This is something I’m looking to do and would like to connect with others who have done this to learn from their experiences. Thanks, Judy

In NY it says you can make spice and seasoning mixes with commercially dried herbs and spices for repackaging. Can I use peppers that I grow and dehydrate to make my own powders and seasonings?

I have heard that you can have a dog if you can prevent your pet from EVER accessing the kitchen area, as well as any area/path that will be used to transport food/supplies to the kitchen. You should discuss this with the ag dept.

You should be able to do this from home with PA’s cottage food law, but if you want or need to rent a commercial kitchen, then you need to contact the ag dept to determine what’s required. You should also contact the farmers market manager to learn about additional requirements they may have.

I am located in Pittsburgh PA. I want to sell my baked goods at local farmers markets, and need to find out what licenses i will need to be compliant. If I am baking in a commercial kitchen that I found on Kitchenincubator.com, do I just need a retail license and farmer’s market vendor license? Please help!

I don’t think that spice blends are allowed, but I’m not completely sure, since the law recently changed. If you could sell them, it would only be at farmers markets. You can contact the health dept to check.

No — to sell pet food in Illinois, you need to use an approved facility, and you need to contact the ag dept.

Did anyone have to register with the Dept of State after going through the Dept of Ag. for their license? I opened a bank account with an EIN number for the business and my banker says I need to do this now. (https://www.corporations.pa.gov/)

The cottage food laws are only if you want to use your home kitchen. You could use the cottage food law to sell your seasoning, but you’d have to adhere to the restrictions listed under the law.
If you want to ship and/or sell out-of-state, you’ll need to use a commercial kitchen and get the appropriate license from the health dept. It will…[Read more]

I don’t know, but most people also need to get some form of business license before they can start running a business. I would have thought that the ag dept would mention other requirements when you applied. http://forrager.com/faq/#starting
