I am just beginning my “cookies and other assorted sweets” home-based business in SC and am a bit nervous about the sales tax idea. My understanding is that our county does not require me to have a business license but that I DO need to get a tax ID number. Any wisdom out there?

Yes, hot sauces would be considered an acidified food, and as long as yours stays below a 4.6 pH, then you should be able to sell it with VA’s basic exemption. I’m not sure, but I will say that sales tax requirements are very dependent on the area that you live. Someone one county over might have different requirements.
