Hey All! I’m new to Forrager and anxious to learn all I can! I have to eat guten free, so don’t have anything in my kitchen that contains wheat gluten. I bake a variety of muffins and love trying new additives to mix flavors, etc. Very excited to get started for the holidays!

I’m a “newby” in Forrager! Very excited too! I make gluten free items specifically due to my own diet restrictions. I make a lot of Fudge and I use various size tins lined with wax paper or foil. David, you’re a genius! Thank you! I don’t know why I didn’t think about a used scale. This one you’ve linked to is perfect and not too expensive. I love this community!

I wonder if you could get a used one. Also I just checked WebstaurantStore and they have one for $100: https://www.webstaurantstore.com/14309/legal-for-trade-scales.html?order=price_asc

Yes, David, I agree, they are strict! And it is seemingly near impossible for me to locate an affordable one. The one the DC govt suggested I buy is $300. So, now I’m a little discouraged.

Wow that’s surprising that they’re that strict! I have never looked into NTEP scales, so I’d be interested to hear what you learn.

In order to obatin a business license for a cottage food business in DC, I need to purchase an NTEP certified scale. Does anyone have one they can recommend? Preferably available on Amazon? Many thanks in advance for your help.

Actually I think you will find that setting a schedule will increase your business! With bread it’s pretty easy, because people typically want bread on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Most cottage bread bakers choose a pickup/delivery day of the week, and then have the same baking schedule every week. It’s your business, you make the rules……[Read more]
