Here’s a wonderful article detailing a couple success stories of cottage food operations in Ohio.

I’m in Auburn, CA and I’ll setup my CFO soon. I don’t think that many farmers markets in the area accept CFOs, but I have seen some CFOs at different events. If you get a Class B license, I think some stores accept cottage food products too.

Oh okay… you’re definitely not going to find that info online! You need to be in close communication with the health dept.
David replied to the topic getting a commercial kitchen in the forum Arizona 10 years, 4 months ago
You mean for building one? It’s super complicated and the rules a different for each dept. If you just want to use a commercial kitchen, you can do that, but you’ll still need to submit plans to the health dept. I’m not sure exactly what your question is, but I won’t have any definite answers because it depends on the dept.
David Crabill wrote a new post, The Attack on Food Freedom 10 years, 4 months ago
The Institute for Justice has published a report titled “The Attack on Food Freedom“, which feeds off the rising trend of saying no to excessive government regulation in the food industry.
The report aims to relate current food laws to the food regulations put in place by Britain in the 18th century, suggesting that the same force that caused the American Revolution is disrupting society today. The argument seems a bit over-the-top, but the authors did a nice job of collecting a series of examples to support their points.
Unfortunately, the report focuses almost solely on the problem and does little to offer a balanced perspective. Only the last page offers some possible solutions, including the cottage food laws and unsurprisingly, the one that the Institute for Justice focuses on — litigation.
There’s little doubt that the report touches on issues that are deeply concerning and need to be addressed. However, some understanding of the “other side” will be necessary to reach any solutions.

You must follow Maryland’s laws, and I don’t think they will allow you to sell in PA.

I don’t know of any Spanish materials for the cottage food industry. I will eventually add translation capabilities to this site, but that probably won’t happen for another year. Our analytics show that over 99% of visitors are English speakers, and about 0.1% are Spanish speakers. I’m sure the number would be higher if it were translated.

Shouldn’t I be saying “a fresh start for cottagefoods.org?” After all, cottagefoods.org is what received a design and code refresh today, but it’s now called Forrager (and it’s now forrager.com). Why the change, […]
Wow, David, big changes! Congratulations on the evolving nature of your site! I’lll be looking it over to see how it might be useful to someone in my position…still working on the Illinois law.
Thanks Aymee! We actually still get visitors from a blog you posted over a year and a half ago. Thanks for the references!

You can’t sell those items if you make them at home. http://forrager.com/faq/#commercial
David replied to the topic catering in the forum Texas 10 years, 4 months ago
You can’t incorporate catering. Catering includes handling food outside of the home, and a CFO, by definition, must do all preparation and handling of food inside the home. So you do need to go the commercial route and talk to your health dept.

I’m sure you have to be licensed, but I’m not sure how. You should contact your health dept.

No — direct means that you are personally interacting with the buyer when the sale happens. But there are also rules about what a food establishment can sell — I don’t think you can even setup a table in a coffee shop and sell there directly.
David replied to the topic Let's pressure farmers market association to consider cottage food applicants in the forum California 10 years, 4 months ago
I think the main reason is that they just don’t need to. Farmers markets are so popular that most of them have an abundance of sellers lining up. Some have a year-long waiting list. There are also some markets that only focus on produce, which is understandable.
Farmers markets that accept CFOs are usually ones that simply like the idea of…[Read more]
David replied to the topic When to use a barcode? in the forum California 10 years, 4 months ago
I haven’t heard of someone getting a barcode, but I’m sure it has been necessary for some indirect sales. If it were me, I’d wait until you have deals with the retail stores, and they can let you know if you need a barcode. They may not require one, or they may put a sticker on themselves.
David replied to the topic Define separate storage for processing materials in the forum Oregon 10 years, 4 months ago
Usually when rules state that business supplies need to be kept separate, it means that they need to be in their own cupboard or own shelf. You should have a designated area where you put them, though that area doesn’t need to be cordoned off from everything else. If you store things in the fridge, you usually don’t need to have a separate fridge…[Read more]
David replied to the topic Confusion over packaging rules in the forum California 10 years, 4 months ago
I don’t know and it’s best to talk to your environmental health dept. I’m pretty sure that you don’t need to worry about the ink on your labels. As for the packaging, I think it wouldn’t need to be food safe, but if you’re selling the items in the box, then maybe there’s a rule out there that states that it must be safe.
David replied to the topic Chocolate Covered Strawberries in the forum California 10 years, 4 months ago
I don’t think they are. You can check with your environmental health dept, but they aren’t on the list so I highly doubt they will be allowed. (even though they are the combination of two allowed items)

The laws are different for each state. Please post your comment on your state’s law page.
If you have a commercial license and make your items in a commercial kitchen, you’ll be relatively unrestricted. unconditional
