Hey y’all,
So I’ve been trying to look into selling baked goods from home, and I’m trying to find out exactly what I have to do to do that…I ran into this website and read about the cottage food law and I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction. I live in Manassas, Virginia, and I was hoping someone might know who I…[Read more]Abby S. joined the group Virginia 6 years, 11 months ago

David Crabill replied to the topic making and selling maple syrup in the forum Virginia 7 years, 6 months ago
Maple syrup isn’t specifically mentioned in VA’s cottage food law, so I’m not sure if you’re exempt from inspection, though you may be. You can sell your maple syrup as a home food processing operation, but that requires an inspection. You should contact the ag dept about this.

Yes, if you’re using a licensed commercial kitchen and have the proper license from the ag dept, you can sell online. http://forrager.com/faq/#commercial

I don’t know the laws about making cologne, but I know that they would be separate from the cottage food law. I recommend you contact the health dept about this.

David Crabill replied to the topic Salsa in the forum Virginia 8 years ago
I don’t think you’ll find a resource specific to salsa, but generally, the requirements are going to be greater if you rent a kitchen. You should contact the ag dept for specific info about the business you want to start. I’d expect that you’ll have to take a course with a Better Process Control School.

Can someone point me to a resource talking about selling salsa under the cottage food law? And specifically what types of events? Farmers markets, craft fairs, vendor events, school bazaars etc. Could I rent a kitchen and bottle it without having to get a prices authority letter under the cottage food law? I am in Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Thanks!!

I don’t know of any caveats. Actually it sounds like you’re exactly on the right track and doing everything you need to do! Good luck!

David Crabill replied to the topic Business license in the forum Virginia 8 years, 4 months ago
I think you need to get a business license from your county or town. The process for getting one would probably be different for each area. You can set yourself up as a sole-proprietorship, and you’d need to get a DBA (doing business as) if you want to operate under a fictitious name (not your personal name).

David replied to the topic Can we sell Rabbit meats? in the forum Virginia 8 years, 5 months ago
I know that you’d need to prepare the rabbits in an inspected facility, but I don’t know much more than that. You need to contact the ag dept for more info.
