Grace, you can accept credit cards with your mobile device and I would recommend Square or PayPal Here.

Hi,
You can opt for mobile payment services. Certain Merchant services provide mobile payment processing app that can accept payments online. The customer also receives an e-receipt. I am using the Virtual terminal for online payments. I think the process is pretty much the same.Abel joined the group Business 9 years, 3 months ago

As long as you’re using a commercial kitchen, then you should be able to do this with the proper licenses. http://forrager.com/faq/#commercial

Correct, it’s almost always illegal for someone to operate a restaurant in their neighborhood, even a small one. When these services get large enough, they have to answer to regulators. One Bay Area service like this (Josephine) recently got shut down by the health dept because they were growing very quickly.

Self-employment tax includes social security tax. That’s the tax you pay in your quarterly estimated tax payments as a business. If you earn under a certain amount, you don’t need to pay quarterly.

Am new here, not too good at navigating site yet…..just wondering about how to handle deliveries to customers…..not sure if I want people coming to my house all the time to pick up items…..time is everything and I don’t see how it could ever be profitable if everytime someone picks up it turns into a “visit”??? Yes, you need a license and you need to use a commercial kitchen. http://forrager.com/faq/#commercial

I’m sure it will depend on your state laws and what the health or ag dept in your area decides. I doubt that you can do this with a cottage food law, but perhaps some states would allow it.

No — that would be considered an indirect sale.

1) I don’t think customers can pick it up from your home. Probably the best thing would be to deliver the items.
2) It would depend on your local zoning laws, since that might increase foot and car traffic in a residential area. Since I just focus on the cottage food laws, I haven’t really tracked resources for commercial food businesses, but the…[Read more]

Some farmers markets are produce-only, but I’ve seen many CFOs successfully sell baked goods at the markets that allow them. I’ve seen two distinct approaches: the niche approach and the bakery approach. The former focuses on a few select products, and the latter offers an array of baked goods. The former can command higher prices but the latter…[Read more]

Just wondering if anyone has any advice on selling baked goods at local flea/farmer’s markets? I know that produce sells pretty well, but I’ve not seen a lot of baked goods (not here in AK anyways). There are, however, quite a few local markets in my area; and I was thinking it might be worth a try. I’m still not sure, though…so I wanted some…[Read more]

Ashley, you won’t be able to transfer it. You will just need to start up a new business in Florida under their cottage food law, just the same as if you had initially lived there. It’s actually much easier to start a CFO in FL, but also much more restrictive, as you can only sell $15K of product per year.

I left some more info in my response to your comment on the law page, but basically, the relationships you establish with customers are everything. My suggestion would be to wait until this is actually a problem before worrying about it.
