I am just beginning my “cookies and other assorted sweets” home-based business in SC and am a bit nervous about the sales tax idea. My understanding is that our county does not require me to have a business license but that I DO need to get a tax ID number. Any wisdom out there?

There is still the $1k limit if your county allows home kitchen operations and you’re selling outside of a farmers market. But as you mentioned, the law is changing and this limit is going away in 2022. If it were me, I’d probably fly under the radar for the next couple of months instead of going through the time and expense of setting up a…[Read more]

I don’t know a ton about it, but from what I have gathered from talking to people:
- It’s not typically practical to offer free shipping
- It might be more lucrative to split it into two fees. For instance, a shipping fee and a separate handling fees. Experiments have showed that customers are willing to pay more when the fees are split.
- For many…

Although most states’ cottage-food laws do not allow shipping, some do. In particular, the new changes in Florida do allow shipping.
That means I am now permitted to ship my products to customers without being restricted only to farmers markets, etc.
How does one determine how to set up the shipping charges on a website? Do any of you have…[Read more]

Have you ever sat down to work on bookkeeping and your first though is “Oh no”?
Many of my clients Quickbooks are a MESS and there is no way for us to move forward until it gets cleaned up. Sometimes it never does. It is so daunting to go back and fix the past.
But what IF this didn’t have to be your story about your financial tracking? What…[Read more]

I’m not sure, but I will say that sales tax requirements are very dependent on the area that you live. Someone one county over might have different requirements. I’d recommend visiting a local farmers market and ask the vendors what they’ve learned about licensing and taxes. That would probably be faster than trying to find the right person in the…[Read more]
