Not sure I am in the right place, but I have a general law question. Are there any states that currently allow cottage food operators to prep baked goods in a commercial/shared kitchen under the same license?

From my personal experience, Square is a great system although they do not offer bookkeeping. They will do most everything else from POS to scheduling to payroll to “banking”, etc. Although for our business we just use it for POSS, scheduling, and savings. They will do the item…[Read more]

In November my wife started a cottage food business in Alabama. She’s always had a passion for baking. She had a decent holiday season with getting numerous orders for cakes and cupcakes. She’s been to my work a few times selling smaller items such as cookies, peanut butter balls, fudge, etc. When she comes to my work she typically sells between…[Read more]

Melanie is correct. It is specified in the law under the CFO definition:
“Cottage food operation” means an operation conducted by a person who produces or packages food or drink… in a kitchen located in that person’s primary domestic residence or another appropriately designed and equipped kitchen on a farm for direct sale by the owner, a family…

I understand that as a cottage baker I can only bake in MY home kitchen, but does that also mean that I CANNOT bake out of a commercial kitchen with the cottage food certificate and sell my products directly to my customers.
That’s exactly what it means. There is an intentional limitation created by restricting volume to that which can be m…[Read more]

The IDPH guide states that…
“Cottage food operations are home-based food businesses conducted by a person who produces food or drink, other than foods and drinks listed as prohibited by Illinois law, in a kitchen located in that person’s primary domestic residence or another appropriately designed kitchen on a farm.”
I understand that as a c…[Read more]

Yes, there are many states that allow a cottage food business to use a commercial kitchen. I don’t have an easy way to show states that allow it, but here is a list of the states that DON’T allow a cottage food business to use a commercial kitchen: https://forrager.com/laws/?limitations=commercial-kitchen-prohibited
All of the other states do allow it.
