I think this prompt asks some important questions. If you want to scale your business, when should you make the leap? What is the process for looking for commercial kitchen space? What questions do you ask to find the right space?

Did the ag dept tell you that? If not, I’d recommend you call them to confirm. If that’s true, you might need to hire a lab to test your alcohol content.

I know it seems weird, but actually those kind of prohibitions happen all the time across the country. The cottage food law doesn’t omit Charleston… the city does. It’s their choice to allow the law and if they choose not to, there’s not much you can do about it aside from moving. The most knowledgeable person about this is Sheryl, the admin at…[Read more]

You can sell certain types of goods that don’t require refrigeration using this law: http://forrager.com/law/south-carolina/
You can sell lemon pies, but not lemon meringue pies, since those require refrigeration.
The farmers market may also have requirements beyond the cottage food law. You may also be interested in reading this:…[Read more]

Typically the answer would be no, but someone did say that their ag dept allowed them to do it: http://forrager.com/law/south-carolina/#comment-51505
If the retail location is a food establishment, then I’m almost certain that you can’t sell there, even though you own it.

I know you need a business license and you need to file taxes every month. I don’t know if they require you to get an EIN… usually you only get one if you are an employer of others, but sometimes it’s necessary for other reasons. You should ask about that when you apply for your business license.

As for your question about renting your house you might need to talk to your landlord to make sure having a business in your home is not in violation with your rental agreement.

1. Yes, if you are selling at an external location like a farmers market.
2. No
3. The label is what you attach to all your products, which gives the consumer info about you and the product.
4. You have to contact your city’s planning division to learn what the zoning requirements are for you.
5. Start simple and small, and work your way up from there.David Crabill created the group South Carolina 12 years, 5 months ago
Actually someone just asked about this in the CA group: http://forrager.com/groups/california/forum/topic/commercial-kitchen/
I know that for some food businesses, scaling to commercial was exactly the right thing for them. A commercial kitchen is a much more professional environment to be working in and can make things easier. However, sometimes…[Read more]
