I’m not sure. I’d recommend contact the ag dept and see what they say. There’s a pretty good chance that they will allow them. If they don’t, remind them that there is also a law for domestic kitchens, which has a more rigorous application process, plus a home inspection. They might allow these items if you go through that process.

You can sell granola with a cottage food business or a domestic kitchen. The domestic kitchen is a bit harder to implement. I’d recommend you start with a cottage food business, which does not require you to get a permit from the health or ag dept. You might need to get a business license from your local area, but it should be very simple to…[Read more]

I have a question about selling pickles at my local farmers market on the Big Island – after looking at the food that’s prohibited ( sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles?!) What are the most current (2021 ) allowed foods and if pickles are not included why not? I use a 5% vinegar which is the recommended strength even for commercial manufacturing
As far as I know, the rules for Hawaii haven’t changed recently. The reason many states don’t allow canned foods is due to botulism concerns, which could potentially be deadly. Canned foods, when properly prepared, are perfectly safe, but their concern is that a home cook might not properly prepare them. I’m not saying that I agree with the…[Read more]

Hi there, I am planning on selling my all-natural/organic secret recipe hummus locally on a small scale in the Spring Hill and surrounding areas, direct sale/pickup only. I do not currently have a commercial kitchen. The product requires refrigeration and is high protein. It would be pre-sold (orders fulfilled) and delivered to the buyers with…[Read more]

I would like to start a coffee and tea subscription box/service. All of the products in the box would be white/private label packaged and labeled by another company so I would not be preparing any foods in my home, just assembling the boxes to be shipped. I have yet to find any information on business requirements for this kind of operation. All…[Read more]

The ag dept doesn’t require a permit or license, but your local area might require some kind of license. See here for more info:
