Hi,
Has anyone on here been involved in petitioning your local government for support of the IL Home Kitchen Operations law? I was wondering if anyone has a letter they would be willing to share that highlights all the points to bring up when asking local government to adopt an ordinance supporting the Illinois law. I am in the process of trying…[Read more]James started the topic $1,000 Monthly Limit in the forum Illinois 8 years, 4 months ago
I am starting to do more business in the area and all of our products are baked in a home kitchen at this time. We are getting pretty close to going over the $1,000 limit, but don’t have access to a commercial kitchen. We’re trying to get our own location to bake out of, but we are waiting on financing. Yes, you need to use a commercial kitchen, and you need to get the proper licensing and training from the health dept. http://forrager.com/faq/#commercial

Yes, you can start any kind of food business if you use a commercial kitchen, but you’ll also need to get the necessary licenses to run your business, which can be complicated.

If I offer free baked goods at a public event (from my home kitchen under Cupcake Law), do I still need to individually package and label the items?

Carole, my understanding is that a health dept cannot regulate a cottage food operation. It is possible, I suppose, that a city hall could prevent your business, even though the health dept cannot.
If they say no, I’d recommend making sure that they’re aware of the cottage food law — many govt depts are not. Also, it might help to communicate…[Read more]
