David replied to the topic Anybody know of a good copacker that they can recommend for a dog treat company? in the forum Questions & Answers 10 years, 9 months ago
I really have no idea. Since homemade pet treats are usually not allowed to be sold, and cottage food operations usually don’t use copackers, this is out of my range of expertise. Perhaps your ag dept would be familiar with how others do it.

It never does seem to be simple, does it?
I can understand that the CF language isn’t controversial (if it were it would probably have stayed in its own bill), and it would likely pass on its own (if considered), but the problem with a mega bill like that is that there are so many things in there, that it increases the chance of conflicted voting…[Read more]

Okay, well if you get the opportunity to double check that with your rep, then that would be great. Everything I’m reading suggests that the bill is now moving onto the Senate for consideration. This is the status page I’m looking at: https://www.revisor.mn.gov/bills/bill.php?b=house&f=HF1437&ssn=0&y=2015
I just don’t want to update the MN page…[Read more]

Shelley, that’s great news! But I do want to make absolutely sure that the smoke has cleared.
Very confusing, indeed. From what I can tell, the cottage food exemption has been rolled into a massive omnibus bill, HF 1437, which addresses much larger concerns than the cottage food one, so now it’s just along for the ride.
It appears that after a…[Read more]
Hi David, yes it’s been a little crazy with the whole omnibus bill thing. However, from what my representative told me, the omnibus has passed all of the senate committees and the only thing happening now is adding some wording that was not the same on both the House & Senate bills. He said that it’s passed all of the hurdles and just waiting for…[Read more]

If you’re adding them after baking, then I’m not sure those would be allowed. You should ask your health dept.

Sarah, what state do you live in?
David replied to the topic is it legal? in the forum Florida 10 years, 9 months ago
It sounds like it’s time for you to go the commercial route. The cottage food law was mainly setup as an easier avenue for someone to start a food business. I would assume that if you wanted to get bigger, you wouldn’t want to be restricted to the $15,000 sales cap of the cottage food law anyway.
CFOs can only use a residential kitchen, so it…[Read more]

No, you can’t sell via an office or other type of business / store front. You can only sell your products at your home, a farmers market, a roadside stand, or at certain types of events. You can also deliver your products to a customer.

Arizona’s law only allows baked goods and candy, but even if you dried produce in an oven, I don’t think they’d be allowed under the law. You probably need to use a commercial kitchen, but you should check with the health dept.
David replied to the topic CFO kitchen in the forum California 10 years, 9 months ago
As far as I know, you can only use your residential home kitchen. The kitchen needs to be in your home, and I think that’s the primary requirement. If your external kitchen is on your property, but separate from your home, then I don’t think you can use the cottage food law. If the kitchen is in your basement, it may be possible.
Although a…[Read more]

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens next. Rep. Newberger keeps telling me not to worry about it. In reality, I think we’ve done about all we can do at the moment. We’ll just have to be patient. Now Gov. Dayton is holding all of the bills hostage because of his early education and gas tax demands. Uffda! I’ll let you know what I…[Read more]
