Tim started the topic Question about free samples of a non-PHF (coffee) brewed to order for sampling in the forum Tennessee 8 years, 8 months ago
I’m curious as to whether a coffee roaster selling roasted beans (a non-PHF under TN law) at a Farmer’s Market may offer free samples of coffee it brews to order. The law in TN states that “[a]ll nonpotentially hazardous food from a home based kitchen may be distributed as free samples.” But coffee, once brewed, techinically has the “potential”…[Read more]

I believe that you would need a commercial kitchen to sell either pizza or pasta. You can’t use the cottage food law. http://forrager.com/faq/#commercial

Are you not able to create a domestic kitchen because you have pets, I assume?
I’d recommend that you start by selling your jams and chutneys locally with the basic cottage food law, before trying to sell online.
If you want to sell online, I don’t know of any loophole that would prevent you from needing to get a commercial kitchen and properly…[Read more]

I am seeking kitchen space as I cannot create a domestic kitchen in my home. I live in Memphis, TN and would like to start selling my jams/chutney online.
Another question:
Does anyone know of a loophole to get around the need for a licensed kitchen by using the Cottage Food Laws? Thanks,

Thank you for responding David.
I got a reply back from someone from the TN.gov office. They don’t know how to handle this either. They’re trying to get some information for me.

It’s a unique setup, for sure. I don’t think I’ve heard of anything quite that elaborate, though I do know CFOs who pool money to buy ingredients wholesale from existing suppliers.
I can’t claim to know anything more than UT’s ag dept, so you’ll have to wait for responses from them, but I will say that a number of states are fine with flours and…[Read more]

I’m very new to the Cottage Food law, so I started with Agriculture Dept of the UT. I started there because my husband and I are developing a coffee house in Clinton, TN. We ran into a problem with finding organic ingredients wholesale. No one would accept our restaurant for wholesale purchases because we couldn’t meet their minimum order…[Read more]

I left some more info in my response to your comment on the law page, but basically, the relationships you establish with customers are everything. My suggestion would be to wait until this is actually a problem before worrying about it.
