You’re welcome. Yes, the same knowledge applies for class B as well, which is the permit I use to have. It will also be nice for you to be able to buy supplies wholesale with the sellers permit. Good luck with your business :) Take care!

Marlyn,
Thank you so much for your thorough reply- your explanation provides clarity and makes total sense. I will be applying for my Cottage B license, but even so, the same logic still applies. I will go ahead and get a seller’s permit anyway, as I believe my county requires it as well. Thank you again and take care.Marlyn replied to the topic Sales Tax/ Sales Permit in the forum California 4 years, 3 months ago
Hi Jennifer,
If you are only selling direct to consumers (cottage food operation class A) and your product is served at room temperate (baked good, nuts, chocolate, etc) and no one is eating on site as in like a restaurant space, then you don’t need to charge sales tax. So no sales tax for online orders, delivery, pickup, or farmer’s…[Read more]Jennifer started the topic Sales Tax/ Sales Permit in the forum California 4 years, 3 months ago
Hi all,
Does anyone understand the necessity/ circumstances for when a sales permit is needed, and when we charge sales tax? I’m seeking to understand whether we are selling direct to consumer (fulfilling online orders, doing delivery and pickup) and events like farmer’s markets, if we have to include sales tax in our pricing. If so, how do we…[Read more]Jennifer posted an update in the group California 4 years, 3 months ago

Hi guys just moved to Davis and am looking to start selling cakes and baked goods at local markets and food festivals. I have access to a kitchen in my condo and am excited to get all of the legal requirements in order so I can jump in ASAP.
A few quick questions right off the bat;
Where is the best place to start the approval process and who…[Read more]

I’m stuck on my labels! Done everything myself so far- website, facebook, marketing materials, business cards, etc. but for some reason I have “label block.” Any advice? Did anyone hire someone for this part, perhaps someone familiar with submitting it to the County? If so, how much did they charge and how long did it take?

I’m a little confused. From my understanding you cany use any dairy or cream ingredients, however the sample label they use for cookies clearly has cream and milkfat in the ingredients. So am I able to use these ingredients in a recipe? For instance can I bake cinnamon rolls using margarine and almond milk? Or would that not be allowed because…[Read more]
