I reached out to St. Louis County today and I was told that cottage food bakeries in St. Louis County are not allowed to sell at vendor events or farmers markets that I would need to use a commisary or commercial kitchen. However, the information that I was looking up about whether I could have a cottage food business and also use a commisary…[Read more]

Yes, you can have both. You would need a separate permit to use the commissary kitchen, of course. Can you confirm that St. Louis County does not allow this law: https://forrager.com/law/missouri-individual-stands/

I have a cottage food business in St. Louis County. I am operating within the confines of their restrictions which is that I can not sell products at vendor events or farmer’s markets unless I use a commercial or commissary kitchen. Am I allowed to have both a cottage food business and use a commissary kitchen for items that I would like to sell…[Read more]

## Hello, St. Louis Cottage Food Bakers!
I’m thrilled to introduce myself to this amazing community! I recently received my St. Louis City business license for home baking, and I’m excited to share my journey with you all. I know navigating the city’s regulations can be tricky, so I’m happy to offer any advice or help I can to anyone feeling…[Read more]

Hi. I’m trying to find a source for guidelines on selling freeze dried snacks. The cottage law is pretty vague so I’m not sure where to start looking for this specific info. I was going to concentrate on fruits and vegetables

Thanks for making me aware of that law text. I wasn’t aware of it and it is different from MO’s previous cottage food law. I agree that under that rule, you should be able to sell muesli from a stand. You probably wouldn’t be able to sell it directly from your home, or deliver, or sell online, etc. You should contact the health dept again with…[Read more]

Hi, From what I understand, you are not allowed to sell pies that are custard filled, cream filled, etc… due to refrigeration? Is this correct?

Hi! New to the group. I am the manager of our farmers market here in Ferguson, MO. I see from previous posts that someone else has had issues getting answers from our county health dept about cottage laws here in North County St. Louis. My main question is who has final say over whether a vendor can sell products at our market made under cottage…[Read more]
Mary, the Missouri page on here is a good starting point, since it summarizes what’s in the law: https://forrager.com/law/missouri/
The best place to find official info is from the health dept. The health dept must follow the law, as long as the law is clear. But they are able to interpret it if it is ambiguous. In the case of canned goods, their…[Read more]Thanks for your reply. I would love to allow cottage food businesses at our market so very disappointed our county health won’t allow it. I would also love it if our health dept was the best place for information. Unfortunately, they don’t even seem knowledgeable on some things. I was standing by our inspector at our last market while he told the…[Read more]
@marebake That is unbelievable. I’ve heard of uninformed inspectors but that is extreme! Sorry to hear it.
