I can’t say that I’ve researched it, but I suspect that many of those laws (I live in CA, so I’ve seen the effects of some of them) would only apply to producers of a certain size.
On top of that, I find that many cottage food producers choose to use the environmentally-friendly packaging regardless, to give their products a higher perceived…[Read more]

I have my DBA, EIN, and vendor’s license. I am wanting to buy bulk candy and resell it online in smaller packaging. I even found a candy wholesale distributor willing to sell to me. My issue now is repackaging. I’m not making this product. I want to make sure I’m not infringing on copyright.
For example, I order a 30-pound bag of candy that is…[Read more]

Here’s something for discussion: Some cities, states and even countries have been banning “single-use” plastic items, including some of the things that we, as cottage-food operations, use for packaging products and samples.
In many cases, these bans focus upon plastic grocery bags and drinking straws, but some include fast-food packaging and…[Read more]

I see now. Have you contacted the ag dept to verify that they do, in fact, permit home food processing establishments? The law is there in theory, but I still have yet to see one implemented. I know a number of counties don’t allow them at all.
So if they will allow one with zoning approval, then I think it’s just a matter of education for the…[Read more]

I am in the beginning stages of getting my application into the agriculture department. I started selling my Elderberry Syrup and Fire Cider on local platforms and I’m realizing to go to some markets and craft fairs people want to see the cert, so I’m working on that. I’m in PA, are there example layouts of a basic business plan? Elderberry Syrup…[Read more]

As an addendum to the above post. As I understand it, Certification of a Home Food Processing Operation in the State of Virginia requires inspection by the Virginia Dept of Agriculture & Consumers Services (VDACS), which is different than inspection to become a commercial food business by the local health department.

Hi David, Thanks for responding. I have a lot of interest from retail shops interested in purchasing my baked goods. So I have been looking into becoming a certified CFO in the state of VA. Part of the application process requires that I include written zoning approval, which would come from the County of Middlesex. I had a brief conversation…[Read more]
