You can’t sell it under the cottage food law… you need to use a commercial kitchen. http://forrager.com/faq/#commercial

So I’m just clarifying : I can sell cakes , cupcakes etc from my kitchen as long as I follow all procedures without having inspectors come to my house as long as I do not make over 15,000 a year ? Also do I have to use my real name or can I setup a separate Facebook page under a different name that I will use for this in particular ? And am I…[Read more]

You’ll probably need to brew it in a commercial kitchen. http://forrager.com/faq/#commercial

I was wondering on the licencing of Kratom tea? It would be a brewed beverage and also sold retail though no food would be sold and it is a non alcoholic beverage so would it be covered by this law in some sort?

All of your products need to be packaged and labeled in your home, regardless of how they’re sold. The section of the law that you mentioned is intended for a restaurant that buys your product and then integrates it into their menu. Since your mom is appears to be a convenience store and not a food facility (which would have a commercial kitchen),…[Read more]

That’s great to hear, Krystle. Sometimes the health dept just doesn’t like the laws the way they are written. But it could also be that they thought they knew what they were talking about and didn’t want to admit that they were wrong. I’m glad they finally chose to allow it.

Does anyone have any lessons learned or advice they can share about their kitchen inspection? Just want to make sure all goes well. Thank you!!
Most people find it to be easier than they expect. Make sure your kitchen is clean and there aren’t bugs in any cupboards. The inspector will let you know if anything needs to be adjusted. This video is helpful, though it was made by the person who pioneered the cottage food law in WA, which should have stricter inspections:…[Read more]

Jess, I understand your concerns and I know it’s frustrating. You can imagine how all of the small local bakeries felt when the cottage food law got passed… what was the point of them going thru all the setup effort a year or two ago?
In addition to the CFOs that are bending the cottage food law, there are many many more that are ignoring the…[Read more]

Well in that case, my latter comments stand. She should be able to help you because she’s family, and you should be able to be her employee. If I’m mistaken about this, I’d like to know. But sometimes health depts are mistaken too.

I’m located in Agoura Hills and delivering to all of LA and Ventura Counties. Nice to meet you Bridget!
My product is homemade desserts- pies and cookies for now, but I sell some custom orders of scones and muffins as well. I’m not sure that Etsy is the right place for me, as no matter how much you stress on each listing and the home page that…[Read more]

I started up my baking CFO last September and have been using Etsy to sell my products for delivery and pick up only. I’ve been posting my site all over Facebook, Instagram, etc., trying to get my business name out there and I’ve continually run into other businesses that clearly state they are baking in a home kitchen, but they are shipping…[Read more]

Yes, you don’t need a kitchen inspection. Assuming that your county/city will require a business license, you can create a fictitious business name instead of operating under your own name. You should be able to do charity events as long as you follow the same procedures as you do when selling products for your own profit. Here’s some more info on…[Read more]
