It depends on what state you live in. 18 states allow in-state shipping. Most of the people selling homemade food on Etsy are doing so illegally.

I don’t believe that extracts are allowed, but you can contact the health dept to check. If they were allowed, you could only sell them at farmers markets.

Yes, you should always be able to buy commercially-produced ingredients and use them in your products.
David Crabill wrote a new post, 2020 Cottage Food Industry Recap 3 years, 10 months ago
2020 was not just a year full of changes for the nation and world.
It was also a year which changed the cottage food industry… sometimes for the worse, but mostly for the better.
There were a number of […]
David Crabill replied to the topic Allowed and prohibitive items in the forum Forrager 3 years, 10 months ago
Adding to what Cottage Oven said, I only add items that I can confirm. If I can’t confirm whether an item is allowed or prohibited, I don’t add it to either list. I list the source info in the Resources section of the page.
If a state’s law specifically says that it only allows baked goods, then I can confirm that anything non-baked is prohibited.
David Crabill wrote a new post, How The Coronavirus Pandemic Impacted The Cottage Food Industry in 2020 3 years, 10 months ago
Recently I was asked to briefly describe how COVID-19 has impacted the cottage food industry this year. Here’s what I wrote for that blog post:
“The pandemic has impacted everyone differently, but it has […]
David Crabill replied to the topic Startup Expense CATEGORIES in the forum Business 4 years, 2 months ago
If you use a free accounting software like Wave Accounting, you can just use the default categories they have. But in general, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. When you add expenses, you can add new categories at that point if your existing categories don’t fit.

David Crabill commented on the post, Wyoming Sets A New Standard For Food Freedom 4 years, 4 months ago
No, Wyoming’s food freedom law is only for consumable items. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they also make it very easy to sell homemade body care products. I’d start by contacting your local health department.
David Crabill wrote a new post, Wyoming Sets A New Standard For Food Freedom 4 years, 4 months ago
It’s July 1st, 2020, and for the first time in over 7 years, I’ve added a new rank to Forrager’s map. I named it “freedom”, and Wyoming has the honor of being the first state to reach this status!
As of […]

David Crabill replied to the topic Add/Update Law – can't submit, dropdowns don't work in the forum Forrager 4 years, 5 months ago
Michael, thanks so much for letting me know. I figured out the problem, but it’s not fixed yet. Thanks for taking the time to explain the updates for Oregon’s domestic kitchen law. Sometimes this happens, where there is a difference between the law and what the health dept actually allows. I will update that page.

We just started 2020 and we already have a cottage food law update!
Except this time, it’s not a good one.
Actually, as far as I recall, this is the first time an established* cottage food law has […]

David Crabill commented on the post, Is A Cookie Business A Good Idea? 5 years, 1 month ago
There are probably no other cookie stores for the reasons outlined above (i.e. it’s not a good sign). Also, college students can be VERY frugal, and one of the hardest groups to sell to. Things I would try: 1) […]
David Crabill commented on the post, How Many Products Should You Sell? 5 years, 1 month ago
James, it partly depends on how many you’ve sold so far. If you haven’t sold anything, then I would just start with two or three selections of one type of item. Over time, you can add more types of items as you […]
David Crabill commented on the post, Should You Build A Website For Your Small Business? 5 years, 1 month ago
Lori, I think you are referring to the easier-to-create blog sites like WordPress.com (as opposed to WordPress self-hosted), Blogger, and others. But I still consider those websites too, and not worth your time at […]
