Hi there,
I just
published another podcast episode, and this one was significant for me.
As you may know, before I started Forrager, people told me I should sell my chocolate chip cookies. And I have
spoken at length about why I ultimately didn't start a cookie business.
But when I started the podcast, I hoped to find businesses that have made a cookie business work for them. I know they are out there! And I don't mean custom decorated sugar cookies, which have a relatively high perceived value.
Mallory Dies, who owns The Crassy Cookie in Stafford, VA, also started with chocolate chip cookies. It wasn't exactly quick or easy to get her business off the ground, but over time, she has developed many creative marketing techniques that have turned her love of baking into a substantial business.
Ultimately, she found the most success with her innovative gourmet cookie sandwiches. These unique items range from “safe” flavors like rainbow chip, strawberry shortcake, or choco fudge brownie, all the way to more “oddball” flavors like blueberry lemon-lavandula, fruity pebbles, and matcha munchie.
Mallory shared how she slowly built a customer base (twice) and had self-doubts along the way. As an introvert, she resisted putting herself into her brand, but eventually “bit the bullet” and started developing significant engagement on social media.
She also shared many marketing ideas, like creating monthly boxes, adding bonuses to orders, and promoting her products in local Facebook groups.
