Hi there,
Each month, I personally respond to dozens of emails that come in from people who are trying to start a cottage food business.
I've listed the most common struggles below, along with my responses, so that you can have them all in one place.
And as a reminder, my
limited-time offer for my CFO Pro membership ends tomorrow. Be sure to

Here are the top 5 struggles that people share with me:
1) I don't know where to start!People usually ask me this before they've taken my mini course.
If you felt this way a couple weeks ago,
hopefully you now feel confident about how to start your cottage food business.
And if you're still feeling unsure of where to start, I encourage you to
go back through my mini course lessons in detail.
I specifically designed the mini course to help you start a cottage food business as quickly (and successfully) as possible!
2) I'm confused about the legal steps that I need to takeYou know why people find this confusing? Because usually,
it IS really confusing! The problem is that there are so
many government departments involved, at multiple different levels (state, county, city, zone).
Hopefully Lesson 2 of the mini course helped clarify your state's cottage food law, which tells you what your state's health or ag department requires.
If only it were that simple! Truth is, you might also have to deal with your planning division, city hall, fire department, secretary of state, tax division, HOA, and the list really does go on and on and on.
I know it sounds daunting, but the good news is that this is a one-time thing: once your business is setup, most of the hard legal stuff is behind you.
I wish I could answer this question here in a few paragraphs, but
that would be impossible! However, I do answer it in my CFO Pro lessons. In those lessons, I tell you the most important things you need to know about
permits, licensing, taxes, accounting, etc. so that you can sell your products legally!
3) I'm having trouble getting my name out thereMarketing your products and building a following is both a science and an art.
Yes, there are strategies that will increase your chances of success, but there is
no one-size-fits-all solution that will work for everyone.
There are many variables at play, including your products, the laws, your skills, your personality, and the community that you're selling to.
That being said, my hope is that Lessons 6 and 7 of the mini course are
all you need to jumpstart your business and get your name out there.
That specific
Giveaway Launch strategy has worked well for MANY people, and it will likely work for you too, if you try it!
4) I'm worried that someone will sue me!If you're worried about this,
let me try to calm your fears: as long as you stick to non-perishable foods, you're not going to make anyone sick, and nobody is going to sue you!
Or let me put it this way: in the 10+ years that I have run Forrager,
I have NEVER heard of anyone getting sued for any reason related to their cottage food business. Heck, I've never even heard of someone needing to use their liability insurance!
Litigation in the cottage food realm is pretty much non-existent. Personally, I think
you don't really need to worry about it at all until you have a large and successful business, OR until you are selling perishable foods.
However, if you still want to
setup an LLC or get liability insurance (which an event venue might require), my
CFO Pro lessons do cover those topics.
5) I'm too busy and can't find time to focus on this businessIt's the ultimate Catch-22: you want to own a business so you can have more time in the future, but you don't have time now to make it happen!
Here's the thing: everyone has enough time to do whatever they make a priority.
So I think the real question is,
how important is this business to you? What kind of difference could it make in your life?
The challenge is that
short-term tasks get in our way. We are bombarded with things that constantly keep us busy.
But to be successful in business,
you have to prioritize things that have little payoff in the short-term, but could
payoff dramatically in the long-term.
If you
listen to my podcast, you will hear countless stories of entrepreneurs who should be way too busy to run a cottage food business. And yet,
they find the time to make it happen!I hope they can inspire you to
focus on building a business that can help support you and your family in the future!
